Mary & Lee Flickinger– a disabled cat’s best friend

Mary & Lee

It is not difficult to find volunteers to raise kittens. They are fun to watch and in a short time are off to their new homes.  On the other hand it is not easy to find volunteers willing to devote their time and energy over years of care for a cat with chronic health issues or disabilities.  Sheltering Hands has been lucky enough to have Mary and Lee Flickinger volunteer their “retirement time”  toward  their specialty—Care of the disabled and physically challenged cat.  Lee is the “go to” guy and Mary provides the nurturing for all the cats in their care.  Both provide the love for their special family.   Their “kids” include:
Ernie-a paralyzed cat from Miami who has to be cleaned multiple times a day.
Gracie-the newest kid with a brain injury that affects her balance
Alvin– a cat with severe skin issues
Denny, Mable and Adobe– they came as kittens with congenital brain development issues causing coordination problems
Ralph– a cat whose back was broken by trauma and cannot use his rear legs.
Murphy– a blind and deaf cat
Daisy– a very sweet and blind cat
Eddie– a cat blinded by loss of both eyes due to an infection as a kitten
